Behind the Lens: Chasing the Spirit of the Arena
An evening born purely from a passion for the horse. After returning from a photography trip capturing horses across Wyoming and Montana, the urge to stay behind the lens and near the arena was too strong to resist.
This collection captures a local barrel racing event in Adams County, Iowa. On an absolutely perfect Southwest Iowa night, fast turns, flying dirt, and the undeniable bond between horse and rider took center stage.
Barrel racing originated in the early 20th century as a way for women to showcase their incredible horsemanship skills in the male-dominated rodeo circuit. What started in places like Texas as a figure-eight pattern judged partly on outfits and elegance officially evolved into the high-stakes, timed cloverleaf pattern we see today. It remains a powerful testament to raw speed, agility, and the tight connection between horse and athlete.
These images were taken completely for fun and for the love of the sport. Physical prints are not for sale. However, if you see yourself or your horse and ask nicely, I might just send you a digital copy. This gallery exists simply to share the grit, speed, and beauty of a local arena tradition.
